There's a local store here called "Farm and Fleet" that sells ... well ... various things but mostly junk. On the Wisconsin side of the border it's "Fleet and Farm". Apparently the founder had two sons who couldn't decide which direction to take the family store so they split up. I've been in the one in Wisconsin and it's halfway decent. The one on the Illinois side, and closest to my house, is complete and utter crap.
Most everything they sell was made in some Chinese factory and relabeled with their store brand. I've got two shovels from them that broke the first year I had them. Do you know how incompetent you must be to screw up crafting a shovel?
Anyway, I took Jared, apprentice farmboy and 12 year old growth machine, into the store with me this morning to find him a pair of work boots and some overalls. They've got nothing. For a "farm" store they don't sell anything but sneakers and a few pairs of girl's boots! There was literally nothing that would fit the boy that he could actually do some farm work in.
On retrospect, I think it's because American kids just don't work anymore. Gone are the days of teen or pre-teen boys laboring on the farm in overalls and work boots. In today's industrialized nation, all children should be in school preparing to be molded into little workaholic consumers and put on the treadmill which will put the most profit into the hands of the industrialists. Good agrarian work clothing is as rare as good agrarians.
At least we didn't get the usual question when I take Jared out with me during daylight hours: "Why aren't you in school, young man?" I swear I may punch the next person who asks that square in the throat.
